How outages are confirmed

Why an alert from Zinn® Uptime means the site really is down, and how quickly you hear about it.

The detail view of one monitored address, showing hourly uptime, response time and its outage history
  1. A check fails

The page timed out, its name did not resolve, the connection was refused, its certificate could not be verified, it answered with an error status, or the expected text was missing.

  2. We check again at once

The failed address is requested again straight away with a fresh request, which is usually served from a different location. If that request succeeds, the failure is set aside.

  3. Two confirmed failures make an outage

When confirmed failures happen on two checks in a row, the address is marked Down and the alert is sent. On one-minute checks that is about two minutes after the site fails.

  4. Recovery is announced, not assumed

When the address answers again it is marked Up and a recovery message is sent, saying roughly how long it was down.

  5. What does not count as down

A bot-protection challenge is not counted as down. And if a large share of checks fail at the same moment, we treat that as a problem on our side and record nothing, rather than alerting everyone.
